Installation view. Your Mortail Coil, single-channel video 4K, 2025. Phantom Limb, Tarzeer Pictures.
In Phantom Limb, Derek Tumala creates a mystic setting for loss and regeneration. Following the evasiveness of facts and the surplus of damage, he begins to speculate. What is missing?
A network of 11 video objects compose a deconstructed film of one-act tales in perfect loops. The doomsday fish is adjacent to an ant swarm forming a skull; one is a premonition of an end, the other, a resurgence from death. Cycles become apparent all at once: there are clocks without time, sunrises and sunsets spilling into each other. And in these inevitable motions, there is little difference between beginning and end.

In an art practice guided by artistic and scientific research, Phantom Limb foregrounds Tumala’s preoccupation with our ability to construct fragments and narratives in the wake of uncertainty. Objective realities become material for mythological worlds; fiction produces reliable truths.
“Sometimes, there is comfort in not knowing it all,” says Tumala. “Poetry seems amiss in a sea of information.” Whether we find what’s missing or not, this room—cast in the light of a blue sun—imagines a space where perspective lives in gaps. A detour from knowledge, between omen and echo.
